Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
